aacmsorchestra.org ABOUT THE AFRO-AMERICAN CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY ORCHESTRA: The internationally acclaimed Afro-American Chamber Music Society Orchestra (AACMSO) was founded in 1990 by Professors Janise White and Valencia Mitchell. Its mission is to promote Black symphonists past and present by providing a platform to showcase their compositions during the Black Symphonist Concert Series. The research arm of the AACMSO conducts systematic research at archival collections to discover and orchestrate music from manuscripts for the Black Symphonist Concert Series. AACMSO first debuted in 1990 on KUSC Sunday's Live, which programming of Black Symphonists continued on KUSC until 2015. AACMSO has performed for Pulitzer Prize Winner, Dr. George T. Walker's interview on New Music Box, KQXR New York and London BBC Radio 3 & 4. Their CD, Minuets & Optional Dances by Ignatius Sancho is archived in the British Library along with orchestrations, and video performances. Other recordings of Black composers are archived in the Research Foundation Library of the City University of New York, the University of the Virgin Islands and the Schoenberg Research Library, UCLA. AACMSO's Black Symphonist Concerts are supported in part by the California Arts Council, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture and the Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles. Additionally, AACMSO is mentioned in the International Dictionary of Black Composers by Samuel Floyd, Jr.; Brass Music of Black Composers by Aaron Horne; Music by Black Women Composers by Helen Walker-Hill; From Spirituals to Symphonies: African-American Women Composers by Helen Walker-Hill; Black American Music: Past & Present by Hildred Roach and the Encyclopedia of Women Composers by Aaron Cohen.
