Event Description

The GRAMMY Museum will welcome acclaimed jazz saxophonist Azar Lawrence for an intimate conversation moderated by Scott Goldman, discussing Lawrence’s longtime career playing alongside iconic musicians and artists. Following the conversation, Lawrence will perform live with his band, The Azar Lawrence Experience.

Over the course of Azar Lawrence’s career, he has performed, composed and/or recorded with such groundbreaking icons as McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Azar’s 2018 album Elementals reached #2 on the jazz charts and received praise from music critics comparing him to Coltrane. In 2017 Concord Music reissued his 1975 album Bridge into the New Age, while Azar’s 1976 album Summer Solstice, remastered in High Definition Vinyl, will be reissued by Concord Music on November 15.

Azar began his jazz career at the renowned Dorsey High School Jazz Workshop in Los Angeles. After high school, he played in Horace Tapscott’s Pan Afrikan Arkestra and played weekly with George Cables, Candy Finch, Larry Gales and Woody Shaw in Los Angeles at local club, L.B. West on 54th St. Before long, he performed with the Ike & Tina Turner band, the Watts 103rd Street Band and War. Azar was a 19-year-old musical genius. Today, Azar continues to roar with his band, The Azar Lawrence Experience, and performs with up to an 8-member ensemble touring worldwide.
