The book Out of Obscurity: Black Survivors of the Holocaust by Ashay Mathieu is a unique and fascinating poetic discourse about Black victims of Hitler. Mathieu uses her literary skills to produce Ekphrastic poetry based on the visual art work of Black Holocaust victim, Josef Nassy and the Holocaust novel The Lamp Shade. Along with poetry that comments on the plight of another Black Holocaust victim Valaida Snow.
Her poetry is inclusive by writing a poem based on the lecture by Holocaust victim Elizabeth Mann during a visit to the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles California. Mathieu writes about life, love and the African American experience through her eyes as she lifts her poetic voice with words that sings praises and rattles the conscience. She focuses on the richness of her ancestry to stories that edify the African American community with a rich tapestry of creative language
