Event Description
Come to the open-air courtyard at Hauser & Wirth for a conversation between artist Gary Simmons and American film critic and KCRW’s host of ‘The Treatment’ Elvis Mitchell on the stage of Simmons’ sculptural installation ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ (2014 – ongoing).
Using ‘Black Ark’ as a jumping off point for their conversation, Simmons and Mitchell will discuss the confluence of music and film touching upon the significance of hip hop and reggae as pivotal influences in Simmons’ three-decade career. Both a literal and metaphorical platform for conversations, music, and performance, ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ is inspired by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s studio and is comprised of amalgamated materials sourced from the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
