Event Description

The Westside Coalition is happy to announce its first ever virtual presentation of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration for 2021.
The keynote will be given by two powerful speakers, the Honorable Karen Bass and Tamika Butler, Esq. Congressmember Bass was the first African American woman chosen to be Speaker of the California Assembly in 2008, and is currently Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus of the United States House of Representatives.
Tamika Butler, Esq. is a national expert and lecturer on issues related to the built environment, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusion.

In addition to performances by the Santa Monica High School choir and the Peace Player Drummers, the holiday celebration will include a Community Light Award presentation to the Village Nation, as well as giving education awards to local students.

We are also excited to partner with New Roads School to create a new, youth-oriented event on Thursday, January 14th entitled “Unfinished Work.” It moves forward the legacy of Dr. King by encouraging middle and high school students to acknowledge, challenge, disrupt and shine a light on institutional and structural racism. We hope you will join us in celebrating Dr. King during our weekend of virtual festivities.

Immediately following the celebration, we will host our annual Community Involvement Fair virtually on our website as well.
