Discover two works of genius almost lost to prejudice and persecution as James Conlon conducts a rare double bill at LA Opera.
First up is the LA premiere of Highway 1, USA by William Grant Still, known as the Dean of African American composers. Norman Garrett and Nicole Heaston star as a hardworking Black couple whose years of sacrifice are about to pay off…until a shattering betrayal upends their lives. Visionary director Kaneza Schaal and production designer Christopher Myers reunite after their work on last season’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Omar for this all-American drama set to a sweeping blues-inspired score.
Following intermission, enter a careless and catty royal court with Alexander Zemlinsky’s The Dwarf. Rodrick Dixon stars as an outcast hopelessly in love with a spoiled princess in this adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s gothic fairytale, directed by Tony Award-winner Darko Tresnjak. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime double feature as Highway 1, USA and The Dwarf take the stage in downtown LA.
