Legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter had been scheduled to perform with his quartet over four nights in Miner Auditorium in January of 2019, but an illness prevented Wayne from appearing that week.
As a tribute to Wayne, an all-star roster of jazz greats assembled over those four nights to perform classic material written by the 11-time GRAMMY winner, 1998 NEA Jazz Master, and Kennedy Center Honoree, accompanied by Wayne’s longtime quartet including pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade.
This special night featured tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington and saxophonist/keyboardist Terrace Martin — two Los Angeles natives who have become the most notable crossover artists bridging jazz, hip-hop, and soul.
Make it a regular date. Bring a glass of wine and cozy up – we think you will discover that digital technology can reveal new dimensions of musical performance. Fridays at Five is not your typical video concert series; it is designed to take you inside the music.
For just $5 a month digital membership ($60 annually), you can become a Digital Member and tune in each Friday at 5 PM (PT) for the latest concert.
And if you’re particularly smitten by any single set, or simply want to help sustain Fridays at Five, a virtual “tip jar” exists to collect your financial munificence.
***For this special broadcast, 100% of tip jar proceeds will go directly to Wayne Shorter for his ongoing medical needs.
