David Blumenkrantz will be signing “Edges of Africa” after being interviewed Q&A style by Dr. Tom Spencer-Walters, CSUN Professor and Director of the DAS Writing Program and Co-Chair, University Writing Council (UWC). Followed by the Q&A, Blumenkrantz will read excerpts out of his book and share a video of Mercy Gichengi, one of the many subjects featured in the book. Blumenkrantz will then open a discussion with the audience for any questions they may have. Drinks and desserts will be provided.
“Edges of Africa” is an anthology of portraiture and documentary photojournalism, chronicling life in East Africa between 1987-1994. During this time, Blumenkrantz lived and worked in both urban and rural Kenya. He traveled extensively to several other countries in the East Africa region, including Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Zaire (today is known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo). The 190-page book features more than 200 photographs in color and black & white, and more than 20 essays covering a wide range of topics in four sections: Rural Life, Urban Life, Pastoral Life, and Political Life. There is also a special sub-section dedicated to Blumenkrantz’s work with street children and urban poverty.
The book also features Forewords written by Antony Kaminju and Noor Khamis, both accomplished Kenyan photojournalists. “Edges of Africa” is primarily a book of portraiture, but also covers significant events that occurred during this pivotal period of African history, including the Rwandan Genocide, the AIDS crisis in Uganda, the multiparty democracy movement in 1990’s Kenya, environmental activist (and Nobel Prize winner) Wangari Maathai, the funeral of Mau Mau leader General China, Eritrea’s struggle for independence from Ethiopia, the civil war in South Sudan, and more.
