Event Description

A new exhibition at UTA Artist Space, in part the brainchild of hip-hop impresario Kasseem “Swizz Beatz” Dean, features more than 20 leading contemporary African American and African diaspora artists who use elements of surrealism to contend with harsh realities of our time.

Curated by Nicola Vassell the show “contemplates the surreal in society against a vigorously shifting 21st century” … “through the lens of artists who operate from a deeply imaginative, often provocative, psychological space.” On the walls are works by Nick Cave, Karon Davis, Cy Gavin, David Hammons, Hector Hyppolite, Arthur Jafa, Pope L, Deana Lawson, Kerry James Marshall, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Noah Purifoy, Tschabalala Self, Ming Smith, Nari Ward, Carrie Mae Weems, Charles White, and Kehinde Wiley among others.

Exhibition dates: February 13 to April 13, 2019

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10:00 am — 6.00 pm

Open Monday by appointment
